Visakhapatnam: Cyclone Fengal caused on Saturday heavy rains in Tirupati and Chittoor districts.
The cyclone disrupted air travel in various parts of Andhra Pradesh, leading to flight delays and cancellations. According to various airport officials, 10 flights between Vizag and Chennai, Vizag and Tirupati, and Hyderabad and Tirupati had to be cancelled on Saturday.
Traffic on busy Nagari-Chennai national highway came to a grinding halt after the road got flooded at the border between Ponpandi and Tiruttani. Heavy rains led to Kusasthali River entering the Nagari town. Officials said the situation is, however, not alarming.
By 7 pm on Saturday, Bheemulavaripalem in Tada mandal of Tirupati district reported 13.1 cm rainfall, followed by 13 cm in Mannarpolur, 12.3 cm in K.M. Agraharam, 11.8 cm in Sullurpeta, 11.5 cm in Poolathota, 10.8 m in Tada, 10.3 cm in Mallam of Tirupati district, 8.8 cm in Nindra of Chittoor district, 8.6 cm in Nagari, 7.9 cm in Puttur, and 7.7 cm in Allampadu of Chittoor district.
The cyclone brought slight to heavy drizzle in parts of the south coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on Saturday. Vizag city of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and other parts in the region witnessed rainfall activity on Saturday morning and evening, which led to traffic congestions.
Weatherman said Cyclone Fengal, which is moving at 7 kmph, started entering the coast on Saturday evening. It is likely to move west-southwest-wards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram with a wind speed of 70–80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph on Saturday night.
Parts of SCAP and Rayalaseema may experience heavy rainfall on Sunday, while other parts in these areas are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, said an IMD-Amaravati report.
