VIJAYAWADA: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has regretted that the sports associations were captured by political leaders during the term of the YSR Congress government and that he will restore glory to the sports.

Players from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab and Delhi including famous cricketer Hanuma Vihari met Pawan Kalyan. They told Pawan Kalyan that best sportsmen could be produced only if the sports associations are improved and reformed.

They pleaded that the sports associations should not be handled exclusively by those involved in sports. The responsibilities of cricket associations should be given to those who have experience in cricket and the Kabaddi association should be given to those who mastered the game of Kabaddi.

The players explained to the deputy CM some of the things happening in the sports associations and governing bodies. “Some sports associations have turned into centres of political employment and the certificates given to sportspersons have become a commodity.”

“Those who have no sports experience are getting government jobs and seats in educational institutions under the quota of athletes,” they said.

Politicians in the sports associations are choosing the children of their families and friends into teams as a result of which they are not able to stand in the competitions, they said.

The players complained that the funds of the sports associations were being exploited. Politicians who have no sports experience should not be allowed to be a part of the sports associations. “We have come forward to support the development of sports in AP state, especially cricket.”

Pawan Kalyan responded positively to their pleas and assured them that the government would pay special attention to the sports associations and restore glory to the sports in AP.
