Energy Minister Gottipati Ravikumar Asks AP Genco To Expedite Thermal Plant Ash Pond Repair Works
Tirupati: Energy Minister Gottipati Ravikumar has directed AP Genco to expedite the repair work and restore normalcy following a breach in the ash pond at the coal-based thermal power plant in Muthukur, Nellore district.
The leak occurred on Saturday, causing ash-laden water to flood agricultural lands in nearby villages such as Amudalapaadu, Mittapalem and Musunuri Vani Palem.
The minister said on Sunday, "The government stands with the farmers. We will provide necessary assistance to them. We have ordered a survey of the farmlands to assess the damage. Appropriate compensation will be provided to the affected farmers.”
He said an investigation would be held to identify the causes of the ash pond breach. Action would be taken against those found responsible.
AP Genco officials informed the minister that the ash pond, spread over 100 acres, was used for storing and drying wet ash from the 3x800mw thermal plant. Due to rains, water had accumulated in the pond. Efforts were under way to pump out the water.
“We will strengthen the areas around the ash bund in consultation with IIT Chennai. A 24/7 monitoring is on to immediately address any fresh seepage. The energy department would take immediate action to repair the breach and alleviate the fears of local residents and farmers,” they added.
