Vijayawada: The water level in River Godavari was rising alarmingly on Wednesday. As the level reached 15.20ft, a discharge of 15.18 lakh cusecs of water downstream into the sea was done at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at 10pm.

The water authorities had earlier issued the second warning when the water level touched 13.75ft at the barrage with a discharge of 13 lakh cusecs at 5am.

Officials said the water level could rise further and then start falling. The water level in Bhadrachalam started falling from 11am.

All the flood duty officers have been put on high alert to monitor the flood banks along the river’s course and attend to breaches, if any, to the banks immediately. The aim was to minimise the extent of loss to the crops and avoid inundation of habitations in low-lying areas, officials stated.
