GVMC unveils Rs 407.75 crore plan to upgrade roads in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam is set to upgrade its road network of 3,086.98 kilometres at an expenditure of Rs 407.75 crore. Under its plan to improve the safety and experience of citizens using these roads, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has categorised them into poor, medium and good roads. Accordingly, the roads will be repaired, improved or beautified.
GVMC commissioner Dr. Sampath Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that they have assessed the condition of all roads. Those in poor condition have a total length of 39.92 km, medium roads extend to 116.36 km, and good roads are 97.27 km.
“We have proposed operation and maintenance (O&M) of these roads on an annuity mode at an estimated cost of Rs 407.75 crore. Strategic allocation of funds will ensure that repair, improvement and beautification efforts are carried out efficiently, improving riding comfort and connectivity within the city,” Sampath Kumar stated.
Repair of poor roads will involve an expenditure of Rs 86.73 crore. Improvement of medium roads will cost Rs 206.28 crore. Rs 114.74 crore will be spent on beautifying good roads. There are 233 roads of combined length 253.55 kilometres that need to be repaired, improved or beautified.
Following are the zone-wise details of these roads based on their current condition:
Zone One: Total roads 11 running into total 18.20 km. Poor roads 4 (6.90 km) – Repair cost Rs 7.80 crore. Medium roads 6 (10.50 km) – Improvement cost Rs 7.38 crore. Good roads: 1 (0.80 km) – Beautification cost Rs 0.38 crore. Total cost Rs 15.56 crore.
Zone Two: Total roads 51 running into total 38.97 km. Poor roads 11 (5.96 km) – Repair cost Rs 4.88 crore. Medium roads 28 (25.60 km) – Improvement cost ₹47.62 crore. Good roads: 12 (7.41 km) – Beautification cost Rs 6.93 crore. Total cost Rs 59.43 crore.
Zone Three: Total roads 32 running into total 38 km. Poor roads 4 (2.10 km) – Repair cost Rs 3.43 crore. Medium roads 11 (11.40 km) – Improvement cost Rs 47.62 crore. Good roads: 17 (24.50 km) – Beautification cost Rs 16.05 crore. Total cost Rs 26.97 crore.
Zone Four: Total roads 27 running into total 29.41 km. Poor roads 3 (1.90 km) – Repair cost Rs 3.90 crore. Medium roads 4 (5.50 km) – Improvement cost Rs 7.80 crore.
Good roads 20 (22.01 km) – Beautification cost ₹26.27 crore. Total cost ₹37.97 crore.
Zone Five: Subzone A – Total roads 11 running into total 16.82 km. Poor roads 2 (1.73 km) – Repair cost Rs 7.03 crore. Medium roads 4 (5.94 km) – Improvement cost Rs 19.01 crore. Good roads 5 (9.15 km) – Beautification cost Rs 14.11 crore. Total cost Rs 40.15 crore. Subzone B – Total roads 3 running into total 11.50 km. Poor roads 0 (0.00 km) – Repair cost Rs 0.00 crore. Medium roads 1 (6 km) – Improvement cost Rs 13.39 crore. Good roads 2 (5.50 km) – Beautification cost Rs 8.71 crore. Total cost Rs 22.10 crore.
Zone Six: Total roads 78 running into total 70.94 km. Poor roads 16 (17.78 km) – Repair cost Rs 50.65 crore. Medium roads 47 (41.08 km) – Improvement cost Rs 84.57 crore. Good roads 15 (12.08 km) – Beautification cost Rs 23.63 crore. Total cost Rs 158.85 crore.
Zone Seven: Total roads 10 running into total 10.43 km. Poor roads 2 (2.73 km) – Repair cost Rs 7.84 crore. Medium roads 2 (0.44 km) – Improvement cost Rs 1.03 crore.
Good roads 6 (7.26 km) – Beautification cost Rs 11.58 crore. Total cost Rs 20.45 crore.
Zone Eight: Total roads 10 running into total 19.28 km. Poor roads 1 (0.82 km) – Repair cost Rs 1.20 crore. Medium roads 4 (9.90 km) – Improvement cost Rs 17.96 crore. Good roads 5 (8.57 km) – Beautification cost Rs 7.09 crore. Total cost Rs 26.27 crore.
