Heavy rains lead to accumulation of waste and drainage problems in low-lying areas of Visakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam: Beaches of Peddajalaripet, Vasavanipalem and Jodugullapalem in Visakhapatnam are grappling with a severe garbage problem. Heavy rains have led to waste from surrounding regions flow and accumulate in these areas, creating difficulties for local fishermen.

Untreated sewage at Lawson's Bay Beach is causing large amounts of solid waste to accumulate during low tide, making sanitary conditions in the area deplorable. Heaps of solid waste, including bags, clothes, gunny bags, liquor bottles, used coconut shells, thermocol sheets, and wood and plastic waste, are a cause of significant concern.

With accumulation of waste, mosquitoes and rats are posing severe health hazards. Fisherman V. Yallaji from Peddajalaripet said their community is already suffering from various health problems, especially vector-borne diseases. He fears diseases will further rise if immediate action is not taken to remove the accumulated waste.
Drainage has become a major issue in Vizag One Town area, particularly during heavy rains. GVMC commissioner P. Sampath Kumar has acknowledged that illegal constructions on drainage channels are obstructing water flow, leading to water stagnating in many parts of the one-town area during heavy rains.
