Kakinada: Heavy rains lashed erstwhile East and West Godavari districts, with drains overflowing in cities including Rajamahendravaram, Kakinada, Bhimavaram, Amalapuram, Undi, Ravulapalem, Tanuku, Eluru, Tuni, Peddapuram and Samalkot.

Low-lying areas in these towns went under knee-deep water.
In Kakinada, the Veedhi Canal and Recherlapeta railway drain overflowed. Areas like Ramakrishnarao Peta, Padi Vari Veedhi, Kalimvari Veedhi, Kollivari Veedhi, Recherlapeta Railway Gate to Kothapet Market to Masjid centre, Kameswari Nagar, Two Town Saibaba Temple, Two Town Bridge to Nookalamma Temple, Ramaraopeta, Suryaraopeta, Jagannaickpur, Cinema Road, Jawahar Street and Kalpana Centre got inundated, disrupting traffic.
Kakinada Poura Samkshema Sangham convener Dusaralpudi Ramana Raju said dumping of plastic waste and other garbage is choking drains, disrupting the free flow of water, and resulting in the inundation of streets. He stressed the need to construct more drains in the main areas of Kakinada to check the inundation problem.
Kakinada Municipal Corporation commissioner Bhawna instructed municipal officials to collect trash from house to house so that householders do not throw them into drains or on roads.
She warned residents that strict action would be taken against them if they threw trash carelessly.
