Tirupati: In a major relief to farmers, irrigation authorities released water from the Kanigiri reservoir on Sunday through two major channels, benefiting agricultural lands across four mandals in the Kovur constituency of Nellore district.

Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy and irrigation officials oversaw the discharge of 100 cusecs through the southern channel and 80 cusecs through the eastern channel. The released water will provide essential irrigation support to agricultural lands in Kovur, Vidavaluru, Kodavalur, and Buchireddypalem mandals.
"Farmers in our region have been facing severe hardships due to irregular water supply, especially during critical planting periods. This water release brings much-needed relief to our farming community and ensures a productive season ahead," Prashanthi Reddy told reporters at the site.
The MLA also outlined plans for the reservoir’s maintenance, highlighting concerns over reduced storage capacity due to silt accumulation. "We have proposed increasing the reservoir’s capacity to 4 TMC through desilting works. Additionally, protective revetments will be installed to strengthen the bunds against erosion and overflow risks," she added.
Vemireddy said she would seek Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s intervention for upgrading the reservoir infrastructure. "The NDA government is committed to ensuring irrigation water reaches the last field in the ayacut, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and protecting farmers' interests in Kovur," she assured. The water release ceremony was attended by local irrigation officials and farmers’ representatives from the beneficiary mandals.
