Vijayawada: People holding onto their precious belongings and desperately leaving their homes were the scenes at many places such as Ajith Singh Nagar, Rajarajeshwari Pet, Devi Nagar, Vambay Colony and Payakapuram as floodwater from Budameru canal rose to alarming levels on Sunday.
Even as NDRF, SDRF, police, civic and revenue officials launched rescue operations to evacuate people stranded in their houses, many residents in these colonies called out for help. Three NDRF and two SDRF teams with a total of 57 personnel, were involved in the rescue work.
People in Payakapuram, Ajith Singh Nagar, Nandamuri Nagar, and Kandrika, which were among the worst-hit areas, were seen waiting on the roofs for authorities to rescue them. Boats and tractors were deployed to evacuate people from their homes and shift them to relief centres.
"All our household belongings were destroyed. The floodwater suddenly entered and rose within moments leaving us with no time to move our belongings," said Bhuvan Chandra, a resident of Devi Nagar.
Satya, another resident, said, “We have seen the Budameru Canal stream overflow in 2005 and 2009, but never in my life have I witnessed the floodwater from the stream submerge our homes at this pace.”
