Vijayawada: The works to plug the breaches to the embankments of Budameru rivulet were intensified on Wednesday with ministers Nara Lokesh and Rama Naidu overseeing the efforts to save the city from a disaster.

Lokesh along with the water resources minister, Mylavaram legislator VK Prasad, WRD adviser, incharge engineer-in-chief Venkateswara Rao and former minister Devineni Umamaheswar guided the BDC (Budameru Diversion Canal) breach-plugging works at Shantinagar in Kondapalli.

Officials said there were 6 to 8 breaches to the canal that heads to the Narla Tatarao thermal power station. The lift of the gates of Budameru regulator at Velagaleru submerged various areas in Vijayawada city, they said.

Lokesh said chief minister Chandrababu Naidu rushed them to Kondapalli to speed up the works.

Rama Naidu said, “In view of the additional flood warning for the Budameru rivulet, the water resources department (WRD) is taking swift remedial action. There was a possibility of the situation getting further worse.”

The minister said WRD officials were accelerating the efforts to plug breaches in the BDC. “The works are being conducted at a brisk pace in Santinagar of Kondapalli of Ibrahimpatnam to minimise the impact of the floods,” he said.
