Kurnool: A 40-year-old Telugu Desam (TD) activist was murdered by his rivals in Hosur village of Pathikonda mandal on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified by police as Vakiti Srinivasulu, a local leader and close aide of Pathikonda MLA K.E. Shyam Babu.
Addressing the media, DSP Srinivasa Reddy said the attackers threw red chili powder into Srinivasulu's eyes before assaulting him with sharp weapons while he was attending to a nature call on the outskirts of the village in the early hours of Wednesday.
The DSP stated that Srinivasulu had no known disputes with anyone in the village. The discovery of beer bottles about a kilometer away from the crime scene has raised suspicions, and a case has been registered to investigate the murder. Police officials are currently searching for the culprits.
Kurnool SP G. Bindu Madhav revealed that the attackers used an axe to strike Srinivasulu from behind, and the police are pursuing all leads. As a precautionary measure, the police have increased their presence in the village.
The murder has sparked outrage among TD leaders. Pathikonda MLA K.E. Shyam Babu, along with several other leaders, rushed to the village to console Srinivasulu's grieving family.
IT minister Nara Lokesh strongly condemned the murder, accusing the YSR Congress of targeting TD leaders out of political vengeance. Lokesh expressed his solidarity with Srinivasulu's family through a tweet and vowed that the party would support them.
Telugu Desam district president P. Thikka Reddy alleged that YSRC leaders are desperate to eliminate TD leaders and workers. He cited the recent killing of Gowrinath Chowdary in Bommireddypalle village in Veldurthi mandal, warning that such violence is part of a broader strategy by the YSR Congress to weaken the TD in the state.
