Kurnool: While illegally built houses were being removed from the 3.78 acres of land belonging to Maha Nandeeswara Swamy in Nandyal town on Saturday, a tense situation arose when encroachers clashed with officials from the endowments department.

The officials addressed encroachments on land belonging to the Mahanandi temple in SBI Colony. Of the 3.78 acres of temple land, 1.70 acres are under the possession of the endowments department, while the remaining two acres were occupied by 27 people who developed plots and built a house. The officials had taken the matter to court, resulting in an order for the repossession of 14 cents of land. Following the court’s orders, the temple authorities demolished the illegally constructed house. The temple officials stated that they would soon reclaim the alienated land.

Recently, endowment authorities have compiled details of temple lands across all districts. According to these records, temples collectively own 4.67 lakh acres of land, with the majority currently in illegal possession.
