Tirupati: To address a long-standing waste accumulation issue, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has launched plans to remove nearly 1 lakh metric tonnes of garbage that has accumulated over the past 30 years.
On Friday, TTD executive officer (EO) J. Syamala Rao, accompanied by additional EO Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, inspected key locations in Tirumala, including the dumping yard near Kakulamanu Dibba, close to the Gogarbham Dam. The EO reviewed the state of the yard and instructed officials to expedite the removal of the accumulated waste.
Speaking to the media during the inspection, Rao outlined the efforts underway to resolve the issue. "We are working to clear 1 lakh metric tonnes of garbage that has accumulated for over 30 years. We are taking steps to mitigate foul odors and are strictly adhering to solid waste management protocols," he said.
Rao further revealed that discussions with the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati are ongoing to facilitate the transfer of waste. "Municipal officials have already visited the site, and we aim to complete the garbage removal within three to four months," he added.
Looking ahead, he emphasized future waste management strategies, including scientific disposal methods. "The wet waste issue will be addressed with the operationalization of the IOC bio-gas plant. So far, 20,000 tonnes of compost have been produced from wet waste," he explained.
Meanwhile, TTD officials also inspected Papavinasanam, reviewing facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, and the park. The EO instructed forest officials to enhance the park's facilities and repaint signboards for better visibility. At Akasaganga, he directed officials to remove encroachments along the pathway to ensure the smooth movement of pilgrims.
