VIJAYAWADA: In a bid to improve the appearance of Vijayawada city, commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra has directed the civic body officials to expedite the beautification of canal bunds and develop greenery on the canal embankments. He also directed them to upgrade the sewage treatment plants (STPs) to reduce pollution in the city.

During his visit on Tuesday morning, the commissioner inspected the areas of Ramalingeswaranagar, Singhnagar, Jakkampudi Colony, Bandar Canal Bund and PCR Junction and reviewed the ongoing development works undertaken in the city. As part of this, the commissioner said the municipal corporation is taking steps to reduce pollution by upgrading the STPs through a project from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

He also stated that the municipal corporation is working to reduce pollution from the used water discharged from households by constructing additional aeration tanks in the STPs of Ramalingeswaranagar, Singhnagar and Jakkampudi Colony.

The civic chief explained that projects for the beautification of canal bunds are underway, with plans to fill the canal bunds in Bandar Canal and Eluru Canal with greenery, and provide a pleasant environment with walking tracks, playing equipment and open gyms. He added that these works would be carried out at a brisk pace.
