Visakhapatnam: The town planning department of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) demolished the statue of former chief minister late Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, which was installed in the green belt area adjacent to the national highway, late on Monday evening. In response, some YSRC workers, led by local GVMC corporators, staged a dharna near the demolished statue on Tuesday.
They later lodged a complaint with the Four Town police. Inspector Vijay Kumar stated that NDA Alliance leaders also filed a complaint with GVMC and the Fourth Town police, alleging that the statue was installed without permission and in the green belt area.
"During night rounds, our officers observed GVMC personnel demolishing the statue. They explained that the statue was installed without permission and in the green belt area. It was not the work of unknown persons," the inspector said.
He added that a YSRC flag was initially hoisted and later the party leaders installed the statue of Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday, and confirmed that the situation is now under control.
GVMC officials stated that they are focusing on removing unauthorised structures within their jurisdiction.
