Vijayawada: Maladi Vishnu, the YSRC's Vijayawada Central Constituency Coordinator and former MLA, has strongly criticised the state government’s proposal to introduce a 1% additional surcharge on state GST for flood relief. Vishnu condemned the proposal, claiming it unfairly burdens the public already struggling with rising living costs.
At a press conference in Vijayawada, Vishnu questioned the state government’s failure to secure adequate funding from the central government and accused it of shifting the financial burden onto citizens. He also raised concerns about the transparency of the flood relief donations, demanding an official report on the funds received and the aid distributed to victims.
Vishnu emphasised that it was inappropriate to tax the public for flood relief, particularly in a state already facing financial strain. He warned that the proposed tax hike would worsen the economic challenges for citizens. If the government proceeds with the surcharge, Vishnu vowed that the YSR Congress would launch a large-scale movement to oppose it.
