Karnataka: Congress wins by-poll in Shorapur Assembly seat

Raja Venugopal Naik of Congress defeated BJP candidate Narasimha Naik by a margin of 18,320 votes in the by-poll.
Yadgir: The Congress has retained its hold over Shorapur Assembly constituency in the by-election. Raja Venugopal Naik of Congress defeated BJP candidate Narasimha Naik by a margin of 18,320 votes in the by-poll.

The seat became vacant following the death of MLA Raja Venkatappa Naik in February.

Raja Venugopal Naik, who led in 22 rounds except for the first, secured a total of 1,14,290 votes. BJP candidate Narasimha Nayak (Raju Gowda) secured 96,052 votes. Narasimha Nayak had previously won the Shorapur seat for the Kannada Nadu Party in 2004, and for the BJP in 2008 and again in 2018.

Meanwhile, Raja Venkatappa Nayak won the seat on Congress ticket in 1994, 1999, 2013, and 2023. Following his 2023 victory, Venkatappa Nayak was appointed Chairman of the Karnataka State Warehouse Corporation.

Raja Venugopal Naik is the son of the late Raja Venkatappa Naik.
