THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, a truck mowed down five people, including two children, in Thrissur district early Tuesday.
The victims, nomads residing in tents along the highway, were hit by the truck on the national highway near Nattika around 4:30 am. Eleven others were injured in the accident and have been hospitalized at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital.
The truck driver and cleaner, who were under the influence of alcohol, have been apprehended.
The initial investigation revealed that the cleaner, who was driving at the time of the mishap, lacked a valid driver's license.
"Showing leniency towards the driver and cleaner, who tried to escape the accident scene, is out of the question. The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has suspended the license, and the vehicle registration will be revoked," stated Transport Minister Ganesh Kumar. The Minister announced that night patrols would be stepped up to reduce traffic violations.
Police assistance will be sought to deter people from sleeping on pavements at night, he said. He affirmed the transport department's resovle to prevent such occurrences in the future.
