Chennai: DMK Organisation Secretary R S Bharati slammed the Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami for urging the State government not to appeal against the Madras High Court order on a CBI investigation into the hooch tragedy at Kallakurichi and for his allegation that Law and Order in the State had collapsed under the present regime.

Addressing the media at the DMK headquarters on Thursday, Bharati recalled incidents in the past to prove that the DMK was never in favour of a CBI investigation in the State and recalled the DMK not opposing Palaniswami’s plea for not handing over the investigation of a Rs 4,800 crore highway scam that the DMK had exposed.

He said that the crime rate in the State had come down after the DMK came to power and pointed to several cases like the seizure of a container with Rs 570 crore cash at Tiruppur in 2016 and the police firing in Thoothukudi during a protest against the Sterlite plant.

Referring to the Kodanad murders and robbery, he said that the recent killings of a school teacher in Thanjavur district and a lawyer in Hosur were out of personal vendetta and could not be termed as law and order problems.

However, if one were to enumerate such murders that happened during the AIADMK rule, it would be a long list, he said, adding that in 2020 the State witnessed 1,672 murders.
