E-Com Rakes Over Rs One Lakh Crore Festive Sales

Chennai: E-commerce sales during the one-month festive month crossed Rs 1 lakh crore or $11.9 billion, growing 23 per cent over last year.

The one-month-long festive season saw e-commerce sales growing to over Rs one lakh crore against Rs 81,000 crore last year, as per the data of Datum Intelligence. According to Datum, the sales which stood at Rs 1218 crore in 2014, has grown multi-fold to over Rs one lakh crore in 10 years.

The first week of the festive month itself saw sales crossing Rs 54,500 crore, which is nearly 55 per cent of total sales. Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Festival were launched in the last week of September.

Mobile phones, electronics and consumer durables as well as home and general merchandise accounted for 75 per cent of the sales during this period. Tier 2 and 3 cities accounted for more than 70 per cent of smartphone and TV sales.

Fashion, grocery beauty and personal care sales also saw a jump of 2x - 4x.

Among different products, smart televisions, air fryers, luggage, security cameras, mattresses, water purifiers, laptops, air conditioners, water heaters, washing machines, ghee and dry fruits are the other categories which saw high interest from customers.

Categories like toys, books, and kitchen essentials also saw a 2-5x jump in a number of orders during the first week.

More than 50 per cent of buyers bought TVs, washing machines, laptops and refrigerators using the EMI option.

Quick commerce is estimated to have accounted for 8 per cent or $1 billion of the sales.

Meanwhile, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) claimed that the offline traders garnered an estimated Rs 4.25 lakh crore in festival sales revenue. Approximately 13 per cent of this was spent on food and groceries, 9 per cent on jewellery, 12 per cent on textiles and garments, 4 per cent on dry fruits, sweets, and snacks and 3 per cent on home décor.
