IMD issues red alert for four districts in Tamil Nadu
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in four districts of Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu. The alert, valid for the next 48 hours, warns of widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and possible flooding due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD predicts rainfall exceeding 20 cm in some locations. District authorities have been instructed to remain vigilant, and schools and colleges in affected areas have been temporarily closed as a precaution. Relief teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been positioned in vulnerable zones to address emergencies.
Chennai witnessed significant waterlogging on Sunday following heavy overnight rains, disrupting traffic and daily activities. The city corporation has deployed pumps to clear inundated streets, while local bodies in other districts are on high alert to prevent urban flooding.
State officials have urged residents in low-lying areas to move to relief camps and avoid non-essential travel. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as rough conditions prevail along the coast.
This bout of heavy rainfall comes amid the northeast monsoon season, which typically brings significant precipitation to Tamil Nadu. Experts suggest that urban flooding in cities like Chennai highlights the need for better stormwater drainage and infrastructure upgrades.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation and has asked residents to stay updated on weather advisories. Citizens are encouraged to contact emergency services for assistance and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
