Hyderabad: The state government has sanctioned Rs.5,560 crore for the Godavari drinking water supply project Phase-II and rejuvenation of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs as part of the Musi river clean-up.

The municipal administration and urban development department issued GO 345 towards this end on Tuesday.

This project, to be executed under the hybrid annuity mode (HAM), will have 40 per cent of its cost borne by the state government and 60 per cent by the agency.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will secure a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco) for the state's share, to be repaid through government budgetary support. The project is expected to be completed in two years.

HMWS&SB's service area now spans from GHMC to ORR limits, covering over 1,650 sq km. Due to rapid urbanisation, including the establishment of satellite townships, special economic zones, the IT sector and industrial clusters, water demand in Hyderabad is increasing for both domestic and non-domestic uses, a statement said.

The projected water demand for 2030 is 750 million gallons per day (MGD) and is projected to rise to 1,014 MGD by 2050. Current supplies range from 580 to 600 MGD. With a projected shortfall of 170 MGD by 2030, the government has directed HMWS&SB to augment the water supply from the Godavari river.

Hyderabad draws 10 tmc ft of water from the Yellampally barrage. Under the new scheme, an additional 15 tmc will be sourced from the Mallannasagar reservoir: 10 tmc ft for Hyderabad's drinking water and 5 tmc ft for rejuvenating the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs.

Wapcis, a Central government undertaking, has prepared the detailed project report (DPR). Key components include headworks with a pump house, a sub-station, a 3,600-mm diameter pipeline from Mallannasagar to Ghanpur, a 780 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) at Ghanpur, and a clear water pumping main from Ghanpur to Muthangi.

Additional pipelines will connect Ghanpur to the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs.
