Hyderabad: For the first time, the Prohibition and Excise department has detected the sale of ice-creams blended with whisky in a café at the posh Jubilee Hills here on Thursday night.

Hyderabad Special Task Force (STF) Excise Superintendent K Pradeep Rao told Deccan Chronicle on Friday that the ice-cream laced with whisky was manufactured in Babel Brigade Foods unit in Jubilee Hills where pizzas, donuts, ice-creams were prepared and later the same was sold at Ariko café in Jubilee Hills.

“Based on specific information, we conducted a surprise check and found 23 boxes of chocolate ice-cream blended with 100 Pipers whisky each weighing half-kg and seized them,” Rao said, adding that more than chocolate, the whisky smell was emanating from ice-cream.

Of the 23 boxes, 11.5 kgs ice cream was supposed to be delivered for a party. The chef Dayakar Reddy and his assistant Shobhan prepared the ice cream using 100 Pipers whisky following a request from a customer for the party. The ice cream is sold in the name of Jelato,” Rao explained.

The chef was preparing ice cream using any high-end brand whisky preferred by the customers, he said, stating that both Reddy and Shobhan were arrested after registering a case under relevant provisions of the Excise Act.

Rao said one kg of ice cream was prepared by lacing it with 60 ml of whisky for additional flavor and intoxication. “We have collected 23 samples from the food manufacturing unit and sent them to the lab for a detailed analysis,” Rao added.

He said the department came to know about the ice-creams made with whisky for the first time and added that anyone indulging in such illegal sale would face serious consequences as per law.
