‘Digital arrests’ increase by 8 times in Cyberabad
Hyderabad: Cybercrimes in Cyberabad have risen by 122.23 per cent this year so far, up from 5,361 reported cases in 2023 to 11,914, the Cyberabad police revealed in their annual report.
Financial losses reached `793 crore, up 241.4 per cent from `232.34 crore in 2023. In 2022, `66.66 crore was lost in 4,850 cases.
Speaking of the abnormal increase in cybercrime cases, Cyberabad police chief Avinash Mohanty said that betterment in the registering of cases and carrying out of the investigation had led to more reportage.
Digital arrest cases showed an 882.35 per cent spike, with 900 cases reported in 2024, up from 102 in 2023. Victim financial losses increased from `6.20 crore in 2023 to `80.57 crore in 2024, a rise of `74.37 crore or around 1,198 per cent .
Economic crimes surged 37.98 per cent, from 1,551 in 2023 to 2,140 in 2024.
Other crime categories, such as property-related offences increased 61.19 per cent from 2,904 in 2023 to 4,681 in 2024, and non-fatal road accidents have risen by 35.97 per cent from 2,224 in 2023 to 3,024 in 2024, also rose significantly.
A total of 421 NDPS cases were registered, with 2,714.772 kgs of contraband worth `24.92 crore recovered, and 19.08 crore disposed of.
The economic offences wing (EOW), formed in 2018, froze a total of `244.4 crore that year. Since 2023, property-related offences have risen by 61.19 per cent , with 4,681 cases in 2024. A total of 203 offenders were arrested, and `30.77 crore was frozen. Among the cases, one involved saving government property worth `400 crore.
A total of 81 per cent of the grave cases were detected in 2024. The most grave crime reported in Cyberabad was murder, with 121 cases reported and 115 detected. Around 7,967 mobiles were handed over to their rightful owners through the CEIR portal. Convictions in the commissionerate grew up to 47.62 per cent in 2024, as against 43.84 per cent in 2023.
A total of 805 fatal road accidents were reported this year, with 31 per cent of the victims being pedestrians. Most of the accidents occurred on national and state highways, with 1,288 registered this year, against 1,033 registered in 2023.
On the women's safety end, a total of 189 victims were rescued and 270 accused were arrested by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Women's Safety Wing, Cyberabad. In 2024, a total of 105 cases were registered under the PITA Act, 1989. With respect to state prostitution, a total of 16 cases were booked and 76 people were arrested.
