Adilabad: Chikungunya on rise along with dengue and viral fevers

ADILABAD: Chikungunya cases are on the rise along with other seasonal diseases like dengue and viral fevers. Many people throng government and private hospitals with the symptoms of Chikungunya and viral fevers in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal and Mancherial districts.

It is said that poor sanitation, water stagnation and mosquito menace have caused seasonal diseases.

As many as 4872 samples were collected till now and among them 809 GE cases, 25 typhoid and 353 ILI (influenza-like illness cases were found in the survey.

Viral fivers are spreading following floods, incessant rains and poor sanitation in the villages and towns.

Many people suffer from Chikungunya symptoms along with fever and are unable to move or walk freely with joint pains, muscle pains, body pains and joint swelling. In the villages, many people suffering from Chikungunya were unable to carry out their agriculture operations.

Drinking water also got contaminated with the flood water entering into villages and streams and rivulets.

Dr Kudimetha Manohar, Agency DMHO, said the prevailing weather conditions are favourable to mosquito breeding and added that Chikungunya cases are on the rise in the villages. He said there are no continuous rains and the break in the rains becomes favourable to the mosquito breeding.

He said water stagnation also resulted in mosquito breeding and these favourable conditions are causing vector-borne diseases including viral fevers and Chikungunya. He said the focus should be on controlling mosquito menace and sanitation.

Dr M. Sridhar, project officer of NVBCP of Adilabad district said there is no confirmation of Chikungunya-positive cases with ELISA tests. Still, private hospitals are treating patients for Chikungunya with RD kits in Adilabad district.

He said there are 155 dengue-positive cases out of 4,360 Elisa tests conducted after collecting samples at PHCs and 66 dengue-positive cases were confirmed out of a total of 140 samples sent to them by the private hospitals in Adilabad district.
