Adilabad: Rs 1 lakh fine, 5 yr jail for selling Chinese manja

Adilabad: Authorities in the erstwhile Adilabad district are intensifying efforts to curb the illegal sale of Chinese manja, a dangerous kite-flying string, following injuries during the Sankranti festival.

Over the past two days, two people were injured by Chinese manja in Nirmal district. Chandra Villas from Vijayanagar Colony sustained a neck injury when the manja cut him while riding a bike near a junior college in Khanapur. Yerranna of Masaipet village also suffered finger injuries while walking in Kadam mandal.
In response, Adilabad town police, led by DSP Jeevan Reddy, conducted raids on several kite shops. During one such raid, Rs 50,000 worth of Chinese manja was seized from Srinivas’ Laxmi Seasonal Shop on Ashok Road, and a case was registered against the shop owner.
Forest department officials also raided kite shops in Indravelli market.
Task force Adilabad FRO Srinivas Reddy announced strict penalties for those caught selling Chinese manja, including fines of up to Rs 1 lakh and five years of imprisonment. DSP Jeevan Reddy urged kite shop owners to discontinue the sale of the hazardous manja.
