Hyderabad:  The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar, successfully treated two advanced cases of laryngeal cancer recently. Spearheaded by Prof. Vikas Bhatia, executive director of the institute, a team of surgeons performed total laryngectomies, a complex procedure involving complete removal of the voice box. The surgeries were carried out on patients from Nalgonda and Bibinagar, both of whom had been grappling with severe symptoms. They had persistent changes in their voice, difficulties in swallowing and breathing.

The surgery team comprised Dr Namit Kant Singh, Dr Neemu Hage and Dr Balaji R.

After multidisciplinary evaluations, it was found that surgery was the only option for saving the two patients, both of whom are now recovering under the supervision of personnel from the department of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery.

Specialists from various departments, including anaesthesiology, pathology, radiology, and radiation oncology, worked together to provide comprehensive care.

Prof. Bhatia spoke of the importance of early detection and preventive measures. He appealed for greater awareness about the symptoms of laryngeal cancer and encouraged people to seek medical attention promptly if they experience persistent voice changes, difficulty swallowing, or any such unusual symptoms.
