Bhatti: 4,000 MW Production at Yadadri Plant by March 2025

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka instructed officials to begin power generation at the 4,000 MW Yadadri thermal power plant by March 31, 2025.

Congratulating state government officials for successfully commencing the oil synchronisation work for Unit 2 of the plant on Wednesday, Bhatti Vikramarka said this milestone marks significant progress in Telangana’s ambitious efforts to expand its power generation capacity.

Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday inspected the ongoing construction and commissioning activities at 5x800 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Damaracherla mandal in Nalgonda district along with ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy.

The foundation stone for the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant was laid by the previous BRS government on February 8, 2015, with construction commencing in October of the same year. The previous government aimed to complete two units by October 2020 and the remaining three units in 2021 However, delays in delivery and a lack of proper oversight burdened the state financially, said Bhatti Vikramarka.

He criticised the previous government for its failure to conduct regular reviews, which led to further project delays and increased costs.

The previous BRS government informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it will generate electricity with 50 per cent foreign coal and 50 per cent indigenous coal. In due course of time, the BRS regime changed its decision and environmentalists went to court as a result of which the project permits were suspended, Bhatti Vikramarka said.

"If the then BRS government had informed the NGT about these changes, there would have been no delay in the project," he remarked.

The Deputy Chief Minister detailed how after the Congress government came to power in December 2023, has swiftly conducted the required public hearing for the project’s approval on February 24 this year and secured clearances by July. This allowed the completion of Unit 2's oil synchronisation work. The current administration has been closely monitoring the project, with weekly reviews to ensure progress.

Bhatti Vikramarka announced that the government has set a clear calendar for the project’s completion, with the aim of generating 4,000 MW of electricity by March 31, 2025. Of this, 2,400 MW will be generated by the end of this year through three out of the plant’s five units. The remaining two units will be completed by the March 2025 deadline, solidifying Telangana’s position as a key energy producer.
