Adilabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to increase the party membership in the erstwhile Adilabad district. The BJP leaders are expecting significantly better party membership this time, reflecting its increased strength in the state and the district. The party now has eight MLAs and eight MPs in the state and won four MLA seats and the Adilabad MP seat in the district.

The party membership drive will start on September 3 in the 731 polling booths in the Adilabad district. Preparation meetings for the membership drive have been going on in the district. There is no membership fee to become a BJP member and the party membership drive takes place once every six years. The BJP high command gave the target of 40,000 members in each assembly constituency while 75 per cent of the total voters are targeted in the constituencies the party won.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Adilabad district BJP president and MLA Payal Shankar said they were expecting a considerable rise in the membership this time compared to 2018. He said there are 17 mandals and one municipality in the Adilabad district and they have shakti kendras all over the district, with each kendra covering 4-5 polling booths. The MLA hoped that the membership drive would strengthen the party base and help perform better in the upcoming local body elections. He added that the party had 32,000 party members in the Adilabad assembly constituency and 21,000 in the Boath constituency in 2018.
