Hyderabad: Former health minister T. Harish Rao on Wednesday said Telangana finally would have a medical college in each of its 33 districts and the announcement of four more colleges for the state by the National Medical Council (NMC) was a result of former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s efforts to expand medical education in Telangana.

In a statement, Harish Rao said Telangana has now become the first state in the country with a medical college in every district, with 34 government medical colleges in all and called it “a remarkable transformation from just five before Telangana’s formation. Under KCR’s leadership, we added 29 new medical colleges in just nine years, increasing the number of MBBS seats from 850 in 2014 to 4,090 today. This dramatic expansion allows Telangana to produce over 10,000 doctors every year, helping meet both local and global healthcare needs.”

Harish Rao congratulated the people of Yadadri, Medak, Maheshwaram and Quthbullapur, where four new medical colleges have been approved and to the people of Mulugu, Narsampet, Gadwal and Narayanapet where colleges were approved last month. “The previous KCR government had secured funds and land for eight new medical colleges, but due to administrative delays under the Congress government, only four were approved last month by the NMC. The Congress government has since appealed to the Centre, promising to meet all necessary conditions and we are pleased that four additional colleges have now been approved,” he said.
