Businessman held for selling adulterated tea powder in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The city police here on Monday arrested a businessman for allegedly manufacturing adulterated tea powder and selling it to the customers in twin cities.

Following a tip off, the Task Force, South West Zone team and GHMC’s food safety officer raided a manufacturing adulterated tea powder unit at Chandanagar and apprehended the person. Huge quantity of adulterated tea powder and related material worth Rs.1.20 lakh was seized from the possession of D. Chandrashekar, 46, a resident of Chandanagar.

As many as 130 packets of adulterated tea powder packet each weighing one kilo, 35 kgs loose adulterated tea powder and other ingredients used for adulteration of tea powder were seized from him.

The police said Chandrashekar was found adulterating tea powder by mixing with idacol sunset yellow colour, neelikon colour to make it appear as high-quality tea powder. He also added cardamom flavor to enhance the aroma, all without a valid license by violation of FSSAI guidelines and supply the same in Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Golconda, Kukatpally, Gachibowli, Tellapur, Patancheru, Lingampally and Chandanagar and gaining money by putting the lives in danger for his profits, the police said in statement.

Consuming these unbranded and tea powder can lead to various health issues, the police added.
