Hyderabad: Union minister of state for home affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Friday called for harsh punishment for a Nagarkurnool-based man, who held a Chenchu woman in bonded labour and subjected her to immense torture.

Describing the incident as "a shameful act of the society", the Union minister said: "The scoundrels who committed atrocities on the woman should be punished with iron feet. It is an incident worse than Nirbhaya."

Hailing from Molachithpally village, the woman was held in bonded labour for two years and was brutally tortured by her employers. According to reports, the employers rubbed chilli paste all over her body, including her private parts. She had been working at an agricultural field owned by Venkatesh and Shivada, who forced her to work more than 12 hours a day without any wages, except for a meagre amount of Rs. 100 to Rs. 200 once a week to cover food expenses.

BJP Mahila Morcha president Dr Shilpa Reddy on Friday met the victim and said that the employers had threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the incident to anyone.

According to R. Racha, the Superintendent of Government District Hospital, the victim’s wounds are healing and she will be discharged shortly. "She was brought to us a couple of days back. Her wounds are superficial and healing. Her condition is stable," he told Deccan Chronicle.

As per the Superintendent of Police, Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath, a case has been registered at the Kollapur police station under sections 376, 354, and 307 of the Indian Penal Code. The employers — Venkatesh, his wife Shivada, along with the victim's brother and sister-in-law — have been arrested and remanded.
