Hyderabad: A thief died after he was attacked by two workers in self-defence after he stabbed one of the workers and tried to flee with their mobile from an under construction site in Asifnagar police station in the early hours of Saturday.

The incident was reported only one hour after city police commissioner Kothakota Sreenivasa Reddy reached Asifnagar police station at around 2am and inspected and reportedly tested in person the condition of the weapons at the police station, sources said.

The incident occurred at 3 am when the thief barged into the ground floor of a five-storied under-construction site in Santoshnagar, Gudimalkapur and threatened Shaik Sanvar and Shaik Saleem with a knife when they prevented the thief from stealing the phone.

Both brothers managed to overpower the thief and attacked him in self defence with sticks after he stabbed Sanver on his leg, Venkateswarlu,
inspector of Asifnagar police said.

Later, Saleem dialled 100 and police rushed to the scene. The injured thief was rushed to OGH where he succumbed to injuries, police said.
Sanvar is being treated in OGH.

The commissioner visited various police stations in the city in the backdrop of a series of murders over last 24 hours. He was reportedly upset with Asifnagar police station staff as two murders had happened under this police station limits in less than two weeks.


An armed reserve constable in Chilkalguda police station had fired in self-defence when four robbers tried to snatch his mobile phone. Meanwhile, police have intensified night patrolling in the city.
