Adilabad: Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Adilabad, Nirmal and Mancherial districts of north Telangana are facing a deficit rainfall, the largest deficit being in Mancherial district, even though the southwest monsoon has fully covered Telangana.

In fact, majority of the total 70 mandals in the erstwhile Adilabad district are facing a deficit rainfall.

In case there are no rains for a few more days, the situation will turn grim for farmers. Many of them have sown the cotton crop, which may wither away due to lack of moisture in the soil.

According to an estimate, cotton has been cultivated over 4.5 lakh acres in Adilabad district alone, and 18 lakh acres in Nirmal, Mancherial and Komaram Bheem Asifabad districts.

Major projects in the region, including Kadam, Sathnala and Yellampalli have not yet received any inflows.

In Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, there is a large deficit in rainfall in five of the mandals, deficit in six, and normal in one mandal while excess rainfall in 3 mandals from June 1.

According to official sources, the actual rainfall from June 1 to June 19 is 68.9 mm against 99.6 mm in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district.

The actual rainfall is 23.7 mm against the normal 97.3 mm in Mancherial district. In Nirmal district, the actual rainfall is 65.7 mm against the normal 106.4 mm. In Adilabad, the actual rainfall is 86 mm against the normal 111.1 mm rainfall.

Fearing withering of the cotton crop, some of the farmers are providing water using sprinklers or pouring water from plastic drums carried in bullock carts. Farmers say this is a crucial time for survival and growth of the cotton plants.

Farmer Bapurao of Indravelli said they have been waiting for good rain for the past 10 days. He is worried that the cotton seeds he has sown in his three-acre land will wither if there are no rains in the coming three to four days.
