Nizamabad: The state government declared ex gratia for the kin of the deceased Gulf migrant workers. The decision of the government brought cheers among the migrant workers and migrant rights activists in Telangana. Migrant workers from Telangana state died in Gulf countries due to various reasons.

Hundreds of unskilled and semi-skilled workers from north Telangana districts went to Gulf countries in search of livelihood. Due to ill health, accidents and suicides, deaths of migrant workers were reported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Muscat, Riyadh, Dubai and other places.

Migrant workers went to Gulf countries by incurring huge debts. In case of their untimely death, it adversely affected their family members. In this context, the Congress party assured ex gratia to the Gulf migrant workers during Assembly election campaign. Fulfilling the election promise, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy declared Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for the kin of the deceased workers.

Gulf migrants rights association president K. Narasimha Naidu said the state government should set up the Gulf Board to monitor the issues of migrant workers.

Ex gratia for deceased workers’ families will not settle the problems, he opined. Thousands of Gulf migrant workers’ families are struggling with financial problems, he said.
