Five Students Hospitalised for Rat Bites at Keesara Hostel
Hyderabad: Five students were hospitalised after being bitten by rats at the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Girls' Hostel in Keesara mandal, Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The students were reportedly attacked while they were sleeping.
Though the students were rushed to the Keesara Government Hospital for treatment, parents accused hostel authorities of downplaying the incident by not informing them about the incident immediately.
According to Dr Soundarya from Keesara Government Hospital, the students were treated for rat bites. However, the hostel authorities denied the claims, stating that the students were suffering from rashes and itching, not rat bites, and called the reports baseless.
The incident has created backlash among student groups and parents, who accused the hostel administration of negligence and risking the students’ safety. “The principal and staff are suppressing the truth and are risking the future of our children,” alleged several parents.
BRS MLA T. Harish Rao also reacted, criticising the Congress government’s handling of gurukul schools. In a post on X, he stated, “Under the Congress rule, students are suffering from rat bites, dog bites, snake bites, and electric shocks yet they are ignored.” He urged the government to take immediate action to address safety issues in hostels and prevent such incidents in the future.
The hostel premises reportedly are often poorly lit, which is believed to be one of the factors contributing to the rat infestation. In response to the incident, the authorities have installed additional lighting to prevent further attacks in the future. Further details about the students' condition and the hostel's sanitation measures are awaited.
