Hyderabad: Food safety officers conducted a series of inspections of canteens in 11 government and four private-run hospitals spread over the state.

Officials came across several hygiene-related violations, particularly concerning compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) of 2006.

The hospitals included Gandhi Hospital and the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, government hospitals in Hanamkonda, Mulugu, Mancherial and Yadadri Bhongir districts.

"Although the violations were found minor, they prompted immediate action. Notices are being issued to the canteens where infractions were found, along with detailed guidance to ensure that these establishments align with the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Rules and Regulations of 2011", the office of the commissioner of food safety said. The guidance particularly emphasises the need for adherence to hygiene norms as outlined in Schedule IV of the FSS regulations.

Food business operators (FBOs) managing the canteens were directed to ensure strict compliance with FSS rules, especially in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

Food safety officers warned of more intensified inspections in the coming days. They asked FBOs to be fully compliant with all necessary regulations.
