Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is constructing 50 water-holding structures ranging from one lakh to 10 lakh litres across the city to mitigate flooding on the city roads. These structures will store the floodwater during the monsoon season and ensure that the city roads are not flooded. The civic body came up with this idea per the directives of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who sought a permanent solution to prevent flooding on the main roads, which has been causing severe traffic problems.

As part of this initiative, the GHMC is constructing 50 water-holding structures across the GHMC region at an estimated cost of Rs.100 crore. Already 23 such structures have been built in 18 locations. When the bunds of these structures are filled with floodwater, the water will be moved into the storm water drains from time to time with the help of electric motors and periodic removal of water in the sump prevents water stagnation on the roads.
