Govt to open affordable IVF centres in city: Health minister
Hyderabad: The Telangana government has announced plans to expand affordable IVF services across the state, with a new centre set to come up in Hyderabad soon. Health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said during Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Thursday, highlighting the alarming rise in infertility cases, which now affect 26 per cent of the population, according to recent studies.
The state currently has 358 private fertility centres, but government-run IVF services have been slow to take off despite promises made in 2017. While the previous government issued GO 520 to establish IVF centres at Gandhi Hospital, Petlaburj Maternity Hospital and MGM Hospital in Warangal, none were functional until recently.
Rajanarasimha said that Gandhi Hospital’s IVF centre, which was technically inaugurated in 2023, had no embryologists, gynaecologists or essential medicines to begin operations. “After assuming power, we ensured staff appointments, procured all necessary reagents and medicines, and made the centre fully operational
by October 15,” he said.
Similarly, IVF services were launched at Petlaburj Hospital on December 9 after the appointment of an embryologist and supply of required resources. The centres now provide a range of fertility treatments, including follicular studies, intrauterine insemination and IVF procedures.
Meanwhile, work at MGM Hospital in Warangal is ongoing, with plans to make it functional soon.
