Warangal: A 70-year-old Government Polytechnic College (GPC) situated close to the historical Sri Bhadrakali Devi temple in the heart of the city is in dilapidated condition and has been posing a threat to the students studying in the college, here in Hanamkonda district.

Established in 1955, the GPC is one of the top polytechnic colleges in Telangana state. It is spread over 29 acres and offers five diploma programmes in engineering and technology. At present 1,650 students are studying in the college.
The college building in which classes are run is in a dilapidated condition. Due to heavy rains that lashed out recently, some of the pieces of the roof slab had fallen in two classrooms. Since the incident happened at night, the students were not hurt.
Demanding the state government construct a new building, the students staged a protest at the MGM Circle recently, complaining that they could not focus on the classes sitting in the classrooms. They said they have been attending classes in a panic condition, fearing that the building may collapse or pieces of the slab may fall on them at any time.

Despite the issue has been taken to the notice of the public representatives and officials of concerned departments quite a few times, no action has been taken so far, the students pointed out. The college principal Prabhakar speaking to Deccan Chronicle said, after the recent incident of roof slab pieces falling in two classrooms, the rooms were locked and classes were shifted to other rooms.
Four years back, a team of students and faculty members of the National Institute of Technology-Warangal surveyed the building and submitted a report to the government informing that the building life will be for only four years and it could collapse at any time after 2024.
The authorities of the education department assured that the Congress government is ready to sanction funds for the construction of a new building and they have asked to make alternate arrangements for the convenience of the students till then.
