Hyderabad: Heavy Rains Damage Qutb Shah Tomb

 Hyderabad: The recent heavy rain has dislodged some tiles on the painstakingly restored dome of the tomb of Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the dynasty and founder of Hyderabad. With several tiles dislodged, a conspicuous patch marred the otherwise stunning restoration.

The placement of over 80,000 hand-crafted, green-glazed tiles on the dome was the centrepiece of the 10-year-long restoration project.

Repair work to address the damage began on Friday, led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the organisation responsible for the original restoration work. The trust has taken the responsibility for restoring the affected section, once again aiming to return the dome to its pristine condition.

“The tiles, which are a very minute portion of the entire section, fell off because of the very heavy rain and thunderstorms. They are being repaired with additional clamps. We are taking necessary remedial measures and additional measures to ensure this will not happen in the future,” said a member of the Aga Khan Trust.

Deccan Chronicle tried to reach out to Dr Vani Prasad, director of the department of heritage, for comment, but she was unavailable. Deputy director B. Narayana responded that he was "not competent to provide information" on the issue.
