Hyderabad: To curb growing drug menace in pubs and other establishments, the Jubilee Hills police have started using dogs that have been trained to sniff out drugs. The dogs were deployed in pubs in the Hyderabad west zone on Saturday night. “We will be continuing the drive on weekends,” a police officer said.

“Anybody found consuming, supplying or peddling drugs will not be spared,” an officer from the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TNAB) said. “Our sniffer dogs are trained to sense any sort of drug.”

Meanwhile, TNAB sources said the bureau was testing advanced drug analysers that it had purchased from the Rs 40 crore sanctioned by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to crack down on narcotics use. The analysers were providing accurate readings of different drugs quickly, sources said.

An official said that with these kits, the police did not need to collect urine samples for analysis. The readings will be submitted to court to secure conviction of drug users.

“The best thing about the new kits that they are handy. These kits can detect any NDPS drug very accurately. They will help us in identifying drug users almost on the spot and prosecuting them as per law,” a TNAB officer said.
