Hyderabad Police Focus on Safety Measures For Homeless Individuals

HYDERABAD: With many incidents allegedly involving homeless people, some of them said to be mentally challenged, taking place in the city, not restraining them especially at religious processions could disrupt law and order, said city police commissioner C.V. Anand. He was addressing a coordination meeting with the heads of various departments and prominent NGOs.

Anand urged the participants to identify street-dwellers and homeless persons, those mentally challenged, rag-pickers and drunks and provide shelter to them. He said medical and mental health services should be streamlined and accommodate those who were mentally affected.
Establishment of a geo-tagging system for local police stations to identify places of worship and religious places in each police station area will be soon done, commissioner said. Sub-inspectors should establish good relations with the committee members in the area.
As a precautionary measure, CCTVs, compound wall, gate and lock system etc. should be installed around the prayer halls, Anand said instructed. Any suspicious mentally unstable person should be reported immediately to the local police, who would get the person checked and take them to a shelter home if needed. Officials of all departments have expressed their willingness to work together to formulate a comprehensive action plan keeping in mind the growing population of Hyderabad city, Anand said.
