Hyderabad: Retired Employee Loses Rs 4 Lakh for Address Update
Hyderabad: A 75-year-old retired employee from Ramanthapur lost Rs 4 lakh after paying just Rs 2 to update his address on a medicine delivery app.
The victim placed an order for medicines through an app and completed the payment. However, he failed to provide his address and attempted to contact the app company’s customer support.
The customer care number was not reachable. However, he later received a call from an unknown number and the caller claimed to be from the app’s support team. The caller asked him to update his address for a fee of Rs 2.
The victim, who believed in the authenticity of the interaction, was directed to open an APK file named ‘Courier Update. Register.apk’ on his WhatsApp number. He was also asked to enter his debit and credit card details, including CVV numbers and PIN codes.
The victim believed it was a legitimate request as the caller introduced himself from the support team, and entered his financial information, which led to unauthorised withdrawals amounting to Rs 4 lakhs from both his credit and debit cards.
The victim realised that he was duped and registered complaint at the Rachakonda Cyber Crime police station under the BNS and the IT Act.
