Hyderabad: It was time for festivities and merriment as Kasturba Gandhi junior and degree college, Marredpally, celebrated it golden jubilee in a befitting manner on Tuesday. The college was established by the Exhibition Society in an area that predominantly housed marginalised sections five decades back.

Addressing the gathering, IT minister D. Sridhar Babu, who is also the president of the 82-year-old Exhibition Society, hailed the visionary efforts of the society to empower girls by way of providing quality education across several educational institutions it runs. It was because of these institutions that thousands of women have emerged as the torchbearers of the country, across diverse fields, he said.

Each year around 1500 students successfully come through Kasturba Gandhi junior and degree college, which is run as a not-for-profit institution by the society

According to Dr D. Gangadhar, president, economic committee, “the founding members of the society had a selfless vision for the downtrodden sections. They were firm in their belief that if women are empowered their whole family will be empowered. This college has been NAAC A plus accredited twice, which reflects its stress on quality education.”

Principal of the college, Dr Rajshree, said, “By concentrating on holistic development of students, we ensure that our girls will not only excel in academics but also earn a name in sports, NCC, and cultural and other social service activities.”

Student council president Greeshma Datta said “I am fortunate to be part of the golden jubilee celebrations. This is a momentous day for all of us.”
