Hyderabad to treat all sewage by March with 31 new STPs, doubling capacity under a Rs 3,866 crore project.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is set to improve its sewage treatment infrastructure to achieve the capability to treat all the sewage generated in the city, by March. The city generates around 1,950 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, 1650 MLD within the GHMC area. Only 772 MLD is treated through the existing 25 sewage treatment plants (STPs), leaving 878 MLD untreated.

To address this problem, the Telangana government is constructing 31 sewerage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 1,259.50 MLD at a cost of Rs 3,866 crore. This initiative, mandated by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), is being executed under the hybrid annuity mode (HAM), where 60 per cent of the funding comes from private agencies and 40 per cent from the government.

The project is divided into three packages, the first covers areas north of the Musi, comprising eight STPs with a capacity of 402.5 MLD. Package II for the areas south of the Musi comprises six STPs with a capacity of 480.50 MLD. Fourteen STPs situated in the Hussainsagar basin form the third package to treat 376.5 MLD of sewage.

The STP capacity along the Musi stands at 615 MLD. With the completion of the new plants, this capacity will be more than doubled to 1,338 MLD. Additionally, Rs 6,677 crore has been proposed to enhance the sewer network across 2,656 kilometres in both core and peripheral areas of the city.

During the Congress government’s first anniversary in power recently six STPs were inaugurated at Nagole (320 MLD); Fathenagar (133 MLD); Miralam-I (41.5 MLD); Khajakunta (20 MLD); Miyapur-Patancheru

(7 MLD); Safilguda (5.5 MLD)
