Khammam: Munneru stream swells, residents being evacuated

Khammam: District authorities started shifting all those living in Khammam district’s low-lying areas to rehabilitation centres on Sunday as the water level in Munneru stream began increasing following heavy rain. The water level increased t0 15.5 feet, just below the first warning level of 16 feet.

Residents from Danwaigudem, Ramanapet, Prakashnagar, Mothinagar and Venkateshwaranagar, which were submerged in the recent floods, were shifted to four rehabilitation centres set up in Khammam, including the government women’s degree college, Swarna Bharathi function hall, and government high school and the Damsalapuram government high school.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka visited the rehabilitation centre at the women’s college and interacted with the people.

He directed officials to evacuate everyone from low-lying areas in Khammam. He said that the state government was ready to spend any amount towards relief measures in the flood-affected areas. Khammam district collector Muzammil Khan informed that there would be no holiday for schools in mandals not impacted by floods.

Meanwhile, police have issued an advisory to commuters travelling from Lingala to Dornakal. Due to overflowing of Bugga Lake, the usual route has been closed. Commuters have been advised to take an alternate route via Karepally, Gate Karepally, Pullur, Ponnekal and Barlagudem to reach Dornakal. Those traveling to Kothagudem have to go via Thallada as Theegalabanjara is overflowing.

The traffic movement has been blocked from Pallipadu to Enkoor for public safety, police said.
