Khammam: Padma Shri award recipeint Sakini Ramachandraiah passed away at his residence in Baikunaram village near Manuguru on Sunday afternoon. He was 61 years old and had been unwell for some time.
Sakini Ramachandraiah was conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2022 for his contributions to the field of art. He was one of the rare vocal folk singers and a hol player from Bhadradri town in Telangana. He was known for his expertise in “Kanchumelam-Kanchuthalam,” an art form particularly identified with the Koya tribal community in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka condoled the death of Ramachandraiah. He said in a post on X, " Ramachandraiah's death is a great loss for folk art. Bringing life to the endangered drum instrument by making the dream of the inherited tribal tradition a life support, he saved the tribal culture and traditions and made not only the joint Khammam district but the Telangana state famous with his drum instrument all over the country."
