Kolkata: The Kolkata Police summoned Trinamul Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy to its headquarters, Lalbazar, on Sunday afternoon for questioning after he sought the arrest of city police chief Vineet Goyal and former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) Dr Sandip Ghosh by the CBI into the rape and murder of an-duty young doctor at RGKMCH.

Mr Roy posted on X-handle after midnight, “CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of Ex Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy to be so powerful, Why sniffer dog used after 3 days.100s of such questions. Make them speak.”

In the morning, the TMC MP was asked to appear at Lalbazar by afternoon. Mr Roy however ignored. According to police sources, Mr Roy shared misleading information in his post that sniffer dogs were used three days after the crime. A senior IPS officer claimed that sniffer dogs were used in search of clues after the recovery of the victim's body on August 9 and on August 12.

TMC also did not endorse Mr Roy's call. It's spokesperson Kunal Ghosh wrote in the social media, “I also want justice in the RG Kar case. But I vehemently object to the demand for the arrest of the police commissioner. He tried his best after getting information. He personally conducted a positive investigation. Such a post from my senior leader is unfortunate.”

Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, “TMC, even your own members admit that Sandip Ghosh and CP Vinit are involved in more than just the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor. This state machinery has sunk to new lows, with party members now questioning the extent of this government's downfall.”

Mr Roy earlier stumped his party on the eve of the Independence Day when he had joined the all women's vigil, ‘Reclaim the Night-The Night is Ours-Justice for RG Kar’, to protest the brutal crime. Like him, two eminent physicians, Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami were also summoned by the city police for questioning at 3 pm during the day for allegedly revealing the victim's identity in the social media posts. Both of them, however, preferred to consult legal experts.
