Adilabad: The state government is sending a ‘letter of promise’ to the beneficiaries of Mahalakshmi scheme under which they will get subsidized LPG cylinders at Rs 500, one of the promises made by the Congress party ahead of Assembly elections last year.

The move was also aimed to bring transparency in the implementation of the scheme. The ‘letters’ addressed to ration card holders were sent to ration shops. Ration dealers in turn have distributed the letters among the beneficiaries.

In the letter, food and civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Mahalakshmi scheme aimed to empower women, reduce the BPL families' financial burden and pollution-free cooking.

It is stated in the letter that people who have active LPG gas connections and have their names in the Telangana food security cards and have also applied for LPG subsidy as part of Prajapalana program are eligible for the scheme.

The number of subsidized LPG cylinders for Rs 500 for each family for one year will be decided by an average use of LPG cylinders in the last three years.

The subsidy amount will be deposited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries online in DBT mode from oil marketing companies.

Hafiza Begun, a ration shop dealer in Vidyanagar colony in Adilabad, said she received 70 letters with regard to ‘subsidy LPG cylinder’ and added that she was distributing them to the ration card holders when they came to collect ration.

She said they keep the ration shop open every month from the 1st to the 15th and distribute rations to food security card holders.

Begum said the cardholders who did not get the letters should go to the municipality and apply afresh for the subsidy LPG cylinder though it was the second time.

Congress party’s Adilabad town president Gudipalli Nagesh said many beneficiaries of subsidized LPG cylinders are not checking their bank accounts whether the ‘differential amount’ under subsidy was deposited into their bank accounts or not.

‘After receiving the ‘letter of promise’, the beneficiaries will certainly check whether they were getting the differential amount under subsidy or not and get their doubts clear on the state government’s promise’, said Nagesh.
